When I question our preemptive war on Iraq, I hear that we should have stopped Hitler as he rose to power. My answer is the we might have prevented WW II if we had a more enlighten foreign policy after WWI than we did after WW II. It can be argued that the Marshall Plan was one of our better foreign policy decisions, even if it contained some selfish economic purposes. Europe did turn out better from our help and intervention.
Can we say the same about our current interventions in the Middle East?
