War Spending

We spend more preparing for War than China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, France, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and India combined. (source Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) $640 vs. $607 billion. Our Defense spending is 6 times more than China, often cited as our next greatest military adversary. Couldn’t all of these monies be better spent on domestic needs around the world instead of on more destruction /war?

If we include all the money the rest of the world spends for arms the figures would be a lot worse.

It would be interesting to know how much Iran and Russia spends on the “Little Wars” going on. Especially Iran.

What is not mentioned it how much is US foreign military aid and how much else is buried under other budget / spending items.

Did they change the War Department’s name to Defense to make it more sanitary to the public?
